Fritz

Fritz is the captain of the Adventure Center team, or officially the “Director of Action and Adventure”, and the self-proclaimed “Thrill Superior” (get over yourself, Fritz). Fritz markets and facilitates to round out the group and keep things functioning. Fritz holds two degrees in Education and Architectural Engineering. In the course of a diverse career in education, training, sales, management and program development, Fritz has proven to be a skilled leader, visionary and entrepreneur practiced in turnaround and start-up. He first became interested in team building as a teacher developing new cooperative programs with children with discipline problems; he further honed those skills in camping, youth sports and with family programs with the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis in an inner city facility branch and an outpost program office in one of the Nations fastest growing counties. Fritz has also served as Big Brothers and Big Sisters Director, and a freelance artist/cartoonist. He has logged more hours in the woods and heat than he ever will indoors in the nice air conditioning (dummy). He is a real live Eagle Scout and entertains those willing to listen with his “crafty” guitar skills. He has, in his life, been known as “youth sport guy”, “camp guy”, “teen guy”, “idea guy”, “that guy”, and “funny looking guy” (although he is somewhat unaware of the latter). As many parents would agree, one of his largest accomplishments is raising his three kids, though he's still sensitive about his “baby fat” that still lingers from the pregnancies. He simply says that he’s, “gone round” to improve his hugs. Incidentally, he is married to the best bratwurst cooker in the world (yummy)!! Everyone loves Fritz because he loves to laugh and his jokes are guaranteed to be the best or the best-worst jokes you'll ever hear. When you visit, ask him to dance for you...it's wonderful!

Sharon
Sharon
comes back to us after being in Texas for 10 years. She was raised on
a farm and learned how to drive a tractor before learning how to drive
a car (insert banjo here). She is the youngest of five children in her
family and was convinced at a young age that she was adopted because no
one in their right mind would have four kids and then wait four years
to have another (haha, great family). She has been married to her high
school sweetheart for 22 years ( just like in the movies, people). She
informed us that “he was the first guy I went STEADY with in 7th
grade”, which the jury is still out as to whether or not people
say that anymore. She also used to think he was weird and he's not quite
over that yet. She also has two boys named Sancho and Paco (their names
have been changed to make them seem mysterious). She has had other careers
as a legal assistant, waitress, seamstress, and human resources generalist,
but she has found her calling and has worked the past 10ish years for
experiential based programs. She has also had her own training and development
business, Above and Beyond Workplace Training Solutions, since 2005. Of
all the things she experiences at work she loves watching people have
“Aha!” moments. This usually happens near her because the
rest of us aren't as good at explaining things as Sharon truly is.

Tyler
Tyler
is a Chicagoland native who loves to have fun! In fact, he is our specialist when it comes to getting groups excited for a great event and has a great amount of creativity to keep things interesting time and time again. Despite his seemly young
(and charming) looks, he has managed to squeeze in over ten years of ropes
course experience. His backround is always a good topic for conversation
as he has had a lot of abnormal jobs compared to most people in this world.
Some of them include a stint as a professional ballroom dance instructor,
a year spent walking the high wire in the circus, a few years as a trail
guide on horseback, and many years of service to outdoor camps and YMCAs
across the midwest. Today Tyler splits his time between the Adventure Center and Indiana University, both as a student of outdoor recreation and a trip leader for IU Outdoor Adventures. His dream is to someday use his knowledge of experiential learning to teach outdoor recreation and leadership at a university (wink wink, IU). In his free time,
of which he has none, he enjoys playing his guitar and singing the night
away or watching a ballgame. He also loves to go camping whenever he can fit a trip in the door
and often brings along the kayaks and fishing poles with his dog following close behind. On that note, the
best place in the world to camp is Quetico Provincial Park, in the boundary
waters of Canada.....at least that's what he thinks, but he's still young.
Go Cubs!!

Ashley
Now
ya'll listen up...we got us a new sheriff in town and she don't take no
lip from nobody. Ashley joins us from the great southern state
of North Carolina. She was born, bred and raised a Tar Heel fan and will
die (a long time from now) a Tar Heel fan. (um, what's a Tar Heel?) Her
interest for experiential outdoor learning came from a six year stint
at a camp in the North Carolina mountains. She then continued to climb
throughout high school and college. Ashley got her BA in Communications
Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (surprise?!)
and then moved to Texas to master the art of "throwin' down what
you should be pickin' up" from the University of Texas at Austin
(did I mention that she's southern?). When she was done mastering, Ashley
moved to Bloomington to be with her fiance (now husband) who was a grad student at IU.
Ashley loves the beach, the fall, and Chinese food(sounds like a great
party)....oh, and she loves being southern "cause their ain't nothin'
betta than sweet tea".

Rachel
Rachel grew up in the small town of Connersville, Indiana, but you can call it “cornsville” like the rest of us. “Rocket shoes” as we often call her is a key source of energy for the Adventure Center. She is an IU student majoring in business economics and public policy with a minor in environmental science. When asked “what cool things can we say about you?” she responded with “I don’t do anything cool”. WRONG. Upon further research it was discovered that she in fact loves bagels and running and we’re hoping she tries both at the same time (under strict supervision of course). She has a twin brother and a sister who lives out in the mountains of Seattle (her favorite place to visit). She spent most of this last summer in London and Germany where she actually got to play some tennis while at Wimbledon. Rumor has it that she couldn’t afford a plane ticket so she just ate some sugar and swam the whole way…in one day. And more, she called her mother “dude”….ONCE and her father has superhuman features which makes her half dude and half superhuman…duderhuman baby!!

Mary
Mary provides many of the laughs that we get around the Adventure Center and I promised Mary that we would assure everyone we laugh WITH her and not at her. She does have some interesting stories to tell. She grew up on a “fake” farm, which is to say that she did grow up with cows, horses, etc. but no one in her family cared for them. They just like having someone else take care of the animals so they could have them around. If that isn’t enough to make you giggle then you should know that bother her arms and legs bend farther than the average Joe. Her cheerleader coach used to ask her not to straighten any joints because “its gross” and “no one wants to see that (true story). Done yet? I didn’t think so. She is such a picky eater that she used to lie and tell people she was simply allergic to foods that she didn’t want to eat. She is currently a finance and economics major at IU with a journalism minor. When it comes to the outdoors she would rather be in Africa, where she spent a month working for an orphanage in Zimbabwe, hiking up Victoria Falls. Soon she will be spending five months in Denmark where she will finally fit in with all the tall blonds who are super pale skinned….Mmm Denmark.

Chad
Chad drives all the way down from Indianapolis where he lives with his wife and dogs. Originally from the Columbia City area of Indiana, Chad is looking to gain experience with us so that he can someday work with schools to incorporate teambuilding skill and outdoor education. He has taught history in middle and high school around the Indianapolis area as well as in Puerto Rico. While teaching in Puerto Rico he learned how to spear fish (a useful tool in anyone’s life). The purpose of this learned talent….to provide his family with food on a teacher’s salary of course! Even more interesting is that his dog learned how to surf by following Chad out to sea (we’re more impressed with the dog). To switch gears entirely, Chad met the late Steve Erwin at his zoo in Australia and was at the “baby-in-one-hand-croc –in-the-other” incident. But the best story is about when Chad took a little visit to what we like to call “the pee pants zone”. While visiting the Sand Dunes National Monument in Colorado, Chad opened to the door to his van to find a bear trying to drive his car. The bear was HUGE and witnesses have told us that Mr. Bear was much smarter than Chad. HA!!

Shauna
Shauna is a native to Indiana. She grew up on the south side of Indianapolis as the youngest of four siblings but spends much of her time in beautiful Bloomington. She recently finished her class work at Indiana University with a major in Therapeutic Recreation and minors in Therapeutic Outdoor Programming, Psychology, and Outdoor Recreation. Shauna loves the outdoors and can’t seem to get enough of it and she has a deep passion for traveling and seeing the world. She also enjoys letter-writing, a lost art these days and loves her dog Shelby. Shauna is great with the younger groups because she thrives off of the excitement for life that kids tend to show. She sports a contagious smile that is sure to brighten up any groups’ day and keeps the laughs rolling.

Brad
Brad is a high school English teacher with a fervent love for the outdoors. His experience in facilitating high ropes and climbing tower courses with children at Camp Riley provides one piece of his experienctial backbone. The other piece of this backbone is from his personal outings doing anything from hiking and climbing to hunting and fishing. Brad has "corporate" experience, as well, having worked in advertising at Finelight Strategic Marketing in Bloomington for some time. After realizing this was not his cup of coffee, Brad heeded what he had always been told he should do - teach. After completing a transition to teaching program, Brad is now a certified English/Language Arts teacher. Brad is among the new staff at the Adventure Center this year and has jumped right in with experience and laughs to back him up. His ability to think quickly and go with the flow is a great asset to have on our team.
